Asian Eyelid Surgery (Double Eyelid Surgery)

Double Eyelid Surgery with Refined Results

Each individual deserves to have an appearance that matches their preferences and personality. That is my mission with every procedure at Maryland Eye & Face. As a leading specialist in oculofacial plastic surgery, I am proud to offer patients across Maryland Asian eyelid surgery.

What Is Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Asian eyelid surgery, Asian blepharoplasty, and double eyelid surgery all describe the same procedure. It is a surgical method to create an eyelid crease in one or both eyes. My target with each procedure is not to Westernize Asian features. Rather, I aim to craft a more dynamic expression that is balanced with your natural appearance and anatomy.

Benefits of Double Eyelid Surgery

  • Permanent results
  • Broader range of makeup options
  • More balanced facial proportions
  • Improved facial symmetry
  • Enhanced eye definition
  • More alert look to the eyes

How Asian Eyelid Surgery Works

I begin with a very thin incision in the upper eyelid. When needed, excess skin and fat can be removed from the upper eyelid. From there, I use specialized sutures that mimic the fibrous attachments that are naturally present in double eyelids. Different sutures are then used to close the incision.

Asian Eyelid Surgery FAQs

Am I a good candidate for Asian eyelid surgery?

Most adult patients who want an eyelid crease will qualify for this procedure. However, I always take the time to evaluate each case for patient safety and satisfaction. Some signs of a good candidate include:

  • Dissatisfaction with the shape of your upper eyelid
  • Discomfort due to the current position of the eyelid
  • Being in overall good health
  • Having no active eye or eyelid conditions
  • Having healthy expectations about the procedure’s benefits
Asian eyelid surgery costs tend to start at $2,500 per eyelid. However, each patient receives a personalized quote before committing to the procedure. The individual price factors in the complexity of the procedure, the techniques required, anesthesia, and more. We always provide a clear breakdown of costs for full transparency in our quotes.
The eyelid crease and position of the upper eyelid are both chosen in collaboration with the patient. Each patient will have slightly different preferences for each of these factors. Using examples, I help each patient find a solution that best matches their aesthetic goals.
Depending on the technique used, Asian eyelid surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours. Most commonly, my patients need only local anesthetic for double eyelid surgery. This local numbing alone proves sufficient to facilitate a pain-free experience. However, some patients may feel more comfortable with general anesthesia, which keeps you fully unconscious. I typically only use general anesthesia if you need it and meets the health requirements for its use.
Since I use anesthesia (local or general), patients should have no pain during the procedure. Some discomfort and pain after the surgery are normal, though. You can easily manage any pain with even over-the-counter pain relievers, in most cases. Pain should improve after a few days.

Each patient has a slightly different experience with recovery based on their age and health. However, a typical timeline looks like:

  • Day 1 to 3: Initial recovery. Expect swelling, bruising, tightness, and discomfort.
  • Day 4 to 7: Early healing. Swelling and bruising should notably resolve. May return to light activities around the house.
  • Week 2 to 3: Mainly healed. Most bruising, swelling, and discomfort should all fade. Residual swelling may remain, but your results should shine through.
  • Beyond: Residual swelling will take some time to fade. Even though it is not highly noticeable, it will influence how the eyelid tissue rests. Full results settle in within several months.
I employ double eyelid surgery techniques that hide any scarring. Any procedure that involves incisions will result in scarring. What matters is the location of the scars and how well they heal. I hide incisions in the eyelid folds, ensuring they are not visible. Additionally, good aftercare can promote better healing, which further improves any scarring.
With incisional techniques, patients can generally expect lifetime results. However, it is important to keep your eyelids safe. Damage or injuries to the delicate tissues or muscles can influence how your eyelids look. Aging can also affect how your eyelids look.

With any procedure, you want to work with a skilled expert. For eyelid surgery, the tissues and muscles are extremely delicate and require the utmost precision.

  • Look at their past results
  • Check for board certification and professional qualifications
  • Consult with them to see if they value you as a patient
  • Read through reviews from previous patients
Typically, patients need to wait about 2 weeks post-surgery before wearing contacts or makeup. This varies based on your case, so always check with your surgeon before taking any steps like these.
  • Avoid certain medications (e.g., blood thinners)
  • Avoid certain supplements
  • Pause smoking for at least several weeks before surgery
  • Treat any pending health conditions
  • Obtain tests or bloodwork as instructed
  • Arrange for a ride home from surgery

Any surgery carries some degree of risk. However, you can actively work toward having a safe procedure. Elements that enhance safety include:

  • Working with a highly skilled surgeon
  • Properly preparing for eyelid surgery
  • Following all post-procedure instructions carefully
  • Being honest about your medical history
