Brow Lift in Baltimore

Also called a forehead lift, a brow lift is a surgical procedure that reduces signs of aging in the forehead area. At Maryland Eye & Face, I provide patient-centric procedures that target their key concerns. No procedure is the same twice, with every element tailored to your specifications. I provide personalized brow lift surgery at my practice in Rosedale to patients from across Maryland, including Baltimore.

What Is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift aims to remove or minimize deep horizontal creases across the forehead and bridge of the nose, and the frown lines between the eyebrows. It also lifts the eyebrows, making the eyes look more open. It does so via precise removal of excess skin combined with tissue repositioning. I take a conservative approach, never removing more skin than necessary. This contributes to a more natural look while fully achieving the results you want.

Common Brow-Lift Techniques

I use two main techniques when performing brow lifts: classic and endoscopic.

The Classic Brow Lift

The classic lift requires a long incision that runs across the top of the head, at the hairline, and down to the ears. However, for a patient with a high forehead, a coronal incision may be used. This incision is made behind the hairline.

Best for: Patients who want dramatic results and to reduce more notable signs of aging.

The Endoscopic Brow Lift

The endoscopic lift requires three to five small incisions across the forehead at the hairline. These shorter incisions mean a shorter recovery time and less scarring than those from a traditional brow lift.

Best for: Patients who want a less intensive approach for milder signs of aging.

The chosen technique depends on several features. Even within the general approach, I adjust individual elements to better suit your goals. I go over each approach’s benefits and limitations during your consultation, considering factors like:
  • The thickness, texture, and elasticity of the skin
  • The bone structure of the face
  • The overall appearance of the eyebrows and eyelids
  • The position of the eyebrows

The Brow Lift Procedure

At a Glance:

  • Typically takes about 1 to 2 hours
  • Performed at a hospital, an office-based surgical suite, or an ambulatory center.
  • Either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is used
Depending on the surgical technique used, one long incision or a series of small incisions is made. Tissue and muscle underneath the skin are moved or repositioned as necessary. At the end of the procedure, I close the incision(s) with sutures, screws, adhesives, or surgical tape. I may place a drain to collect excess blood and fluid when needed. After surgery, you are moved to a recovery area for observation until I am sure it is safe for you to return home.

Brow Lift Results: What to Expect

Depending on the patient’s presurgical appearance and goals, a brow lift’s results can be either subtle or dramatic. Eyes will appear more “open,” and creases across the forehead, bridge of the nose, and between the eyes will be much less prominent.

Brow Lift FAQs

How long is the recovery for a brow lift?

A patient typically returns home on the day of the brow-lift surgery, although an overnight stay may be necessary for some. Swelling may be pronounced for the first day or two after surgery, although most swelling goes away within 2 weeks. To prevent post-operative bleeding, bending and heavy lifting should be avoided for a few days. It can take up to 6 months for swelling to fully subside and scars to fade.
While the changes are immediate, your results start to have good visibility after 2 weeks. At this point, enough swelling goes down that you can begin appreciating the improvements. Though residual swelling takes longer to fade, it will mostly have only a subtle influence. As it fades, the tissues settle into their final position.

Most patients see benefits for 10+ years. But sustained results also depend on lifestyle factors. I provide clear outlines of healthy skin habits for each of my patients. You will see longer-lasting brow lift results if you:

  • Avoid excess sun exposure
  • Always wear UV protection outside
  • Maintain a good skin care regimen
  • Stay hydrated and keep to a healthy diet
  • Avoid things that age you (excess alcohol, smoking)
Brow lift candidates will want to target signs of aging in the forehead. But the right candidate will also be in overall good health. I take my patients’ safety seriously, and I conduct thorough medical history checks to ensure there are no risk factors present. Patients with minor signs of aging may also consider nonsurgical procedures. These provide rejuvenation via milder, less invasive treatments.
The price of a brow lift often reflects its quality. A highly experienced surgeon may require more of an investment, but it means you will see results that keep you smiling for years. Even at a single practice, the cost of a brow lift can vary, typically ranging between $4,000 and $8,000. Cost elements include the type of brow lift, procedure complexity, and type of anesthesia used.
I perform combination procedures frequently. Most of the time, this involves combining a brow lift with eyelid surgery. These two procedures complement each other, providing excellent upper face rejuvenation. You can combine either upper or lower eyelid surgery with a brow lift. For the right patient, you can even combine both eyelid procedures with a brow lift. Combination procedures enhance results without requiring multiple recovery periods.

Prior to scheduling surgery, the patient and surgeon should fully discuss the risks associated with a brow lift. In addition to those associated with any type of surgery, a brow lift’s risks include the following:

  • Hair loss around the incision site(s)
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Higher hairline
  • Injury to facial nerves
  • Eye dryness/irritation

The risk of complications is minimized by choosing a board-certified surgeon with experience performing brow lifts. As a board-certified ophthalmologist, my precise specialty lies in facial procedures. I always emphasize patients’ safety with each procedure.
