Eyelid Skin Tags: Are They Harmless or Should They Be Treated?

A skin tag, also referred to as an acrochordon, is a soft, small piece of flesh-colored or dark tissue attached to the surface of the skin. While some skin tags slowly develop over time, some people are born with multiple skin tags. Most skin tags are harmless, but they can become frustrating if they are continuously irritated.

For instance, skin tags can get caught in zippers or jewelry, creating irritation. Because of this, individuals choose to have skin tags removed for precautionary reasons. Additionally, those suffering from eyelid skin tags may notice irritation of the eye or a constant, unwelcome sensation upon blinking. Other patients opt to remove skin tags for cosmetic reasons.

Eyelid Skin Tags

One of the most common locations for skin tags to develop is the eyelid. Due to the tight skin and delicate location, many individuals find the skin tags aggravating. The skin tags may be persistent, constantly grazing the skin each time the individual blinks.

In addition, some people may find themselves rubbing their eyes repeatedly. This is a strong indication that the eyelid skin tags are bothersome and should be removed. Others may choose to have their eyelid skin tags removed due to aesthetic reasons. If a skin tag on the eyelid is noticeable or makes a person feel embarrassed, they will likely want it removed.

The Causes of Skin Tags

According to the National Institute of Health, skin tags present as soft papules on a narrow stalk. Skin tags are most often found in intertriginous areas such as the groin, neck, and eyelids. Skin tag lesions are small, measuring only 1 to 5 millimeters.

Some of the causes of skin tags include:

  • Skin aging
  • Obesity
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Insulin resistance
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Tuberous sclerosis
  • Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome
  • Frequent skin irritation

Skin tags develop due to the above, but are also associated with certain health issues, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Abnormal lipid profiles
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • High blood pressure
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Human papillomavirus infection

Those with skin tags in areas that irritate, such as the eyelids, may choose to have them treated not only for cosmetic reasons, but also to avoid bleeding or bruising associated with ongoing irritation.

Skin Tag Appearance

Those with skin tags on the eyelid are likely to choose to have them removed. Whether an individual wants them removed for cosmetic reasons or because they interfere with vision, eyelid skin tags can be an annoyance.

Although skin tags can slightly differ in appearance, they are primarily categorized into several general types:

  • Small skin tags: These skin tags are 1-2 mm wide and tall. They can appear on the eyelids, but are most often found on the neck or under the arms.
  • Mid-sized skin tags: These skin tags can be single or multiple. They are 5 mm long and 2 mm wide and can occur at other sites on the body.
  • Large skin tags: These skin tags are typically found on the lower body, near the groin.
Giant skin tags: Located under the arms or in the genital region, giant skin tags may cause extreme discomfort.

Skin tags may range in shape or size and can be removed by a professional surgeon.
